Tony Gonsolin and Freddie Freeman Lead Dodgers to 8-1 Victory Over Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (AP) — Tony Gonsolin pitched five scoreless innings, and Freddie Freeman hit a home run while going 4-for-4, propelling the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-1 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Mookie Betts also blasted a home run for Los Angeles, contributing to a total of 18 hits that secured a split in their four-game series against the National League West rivals. Meanwhile, with San Diego’s loss of 9-3 to Colorado, the Dodgers took back the top spot in their division, just one game ahead of the Padres.

Gonsolin (2-0), making his third start after missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, threw 84 pitches, walked two batters, and struck out four. The right-hander improved his ERA to 2. 81, giving a much-needed boost to the Dodgers’ pitching staff, which is missing injured starters Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow.

Freeman raised his batting average, the highest in the National League, to. 376. He drove in Mookie Betts with a double in the first inning against Zac Gallen (3-5), hit another double in the third, and produced a sacrifice fly in the fifth. He also added his ninth home run against Joe Mantiply in the seventh inning and recorded a single off Venezuelan José Castillo in the ninth.

Betts’ home run, his sixth of the season, came in the ninth inning against Castillo.

Gallen pitched five and a third innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs. He issued two walks and struck out five batters.

Arizona’s Venezuelan José Herrera doubled off Ben Casparius in the seventh, bringing Alec Thomas home from first base.

For the Dodgers, Cuban Andy Pagés went 2-for-5 with one run batted in; Puerto Rican Enrique Hernández had 1 hit in 2 at-bats; and Venezuelan Miguel Rojas went 1-for-2.

For the Diamondbacks, the Venezuelans included José Herrera, who was 1-for-3 with one run batted in, and Eugenio Suárez, who went 0-for-4; Dominicans Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo, who had 0-for-1 and 1-for-4, respectively; and Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. , who also went 0-for-4.
