Job Description

NBC News seeks a highly experienced assistant managing editor to help lead its national security, law enforcement, and legal affairs unit. This role will report to the Senior Executive Editor. Responsibilities include immediately responding to breaking news, rapidly approving sources, decisively assigning stories, and flawlessly editing and publishing pieces without errors at high speed.

Breaking exclusive stories and beating the competition will always be a top priority.

The ideal candidate is a strong editor with a deep knowledge of national security, law enforcement, and legal affairs. The editor will primarily work on written stories but should also prioritize working across platforms within the NBC News group like nbcnews.com, Nightly News, News NOW and MSNBC. Experience in television, investigative and data journalism is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of correspondents, reporters, producers and associate producers covering national security, law enforcement and legal affairs
  • Display at all times exceptionally strong news judgment, uncompromising journalistic ethics, calm under pressure, and attention to detail
  • Maintain a deep and timely understanding of current events and ongoing coverage across NBC News platforms and competitors
  • Develop robust, collaborative and working relationships with digital, television teams and editorial leaders across NBCUniversal News Group platforms

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • A proven track record of successfully assigning and editing original, high-impact, award-winning national security, law enforcement and legal affairs coverage
  • 10+ years of editing and reporting experience at a major news organization, with a preference for editing national security, law enforcement, and legal affairs reporting
  • Extraordinary editing skills — an ability to edit everything from a 4,000-word investigation to a 250-word fast-turn
  • Impeccable news judgment when it comes to covering breaking stories to assigning in-depth, long-term stories
  • Able and willing to work flexible hours, including breaking news on weekends
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience
  • Willing to be based in 30 Rockefeller Center in New York or NBC News’s Washington, D.C. bureau and must work in the office 3-5 days per week.

Desired Characteristics

  • Ability to guide and inspire both veteran and young journalists
  • Extraordinary communication skills — clarity, tact, respect and enthusiasm

Additional Requirements

    • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
